Permethrin and Cetrimide


Permethrin and Cetrimide are two active ingredients commonly combined in a topical lotion used to treat skin infections and infestations.

•Permethrin (usually 5% w/v): A synthetic *pyrethroid insecticide.

•Cetrimide (usually 0.5–1% w/v): A quaternary ammonium compound with antiseptic and surfactant properties.

Scabies: Infestation with Sarcoptes scabiei (itch mite).

Lice (Pediculosis): Head lice, body lice, and pubic lice.

Cetrimide

Antiseptic action: Prevents secondary infection in scabies or wounds.

Wound cleaning: Helps in cleansing minor cuts, burns, and abrasions.

Combination lotion (Permethrin + Cetrimide) is typically used for:

Scabies treatment with secondary bacterial infection risk.

Lice infestation with skin irritation or sores.

Cleaning and disinfecting infested areas.

Permethrin

•Neurotoxin for parasites: Disrupts sodium channels on nerve cell membranes of mites and lice.

•Causes paralysis and death of parasites.

Cetrimide

•Cationic surfactant: Disrupts bacterial cell membranes.

•Effective against Gram-positive bacteria and some Gram-negative organisms.

•Also helps in cleaning and breaking down oils/skin debris.

1-Apply the lotion from the neck down to the soles of the feet (including under fingernails and toenails).

2-Leave it on for 8–12 hours (often overnight).

3-Wash off thoroughly with soap and water.

4-For lice, apply on the scalp and hair, leave for 10 minutes, then rinse thoroughly.

Usually, one application is enough, but in some cases, a second may be needed after 7 days.

•For external use only.

•Avoid contact with eyes, mouth, nose, or open wounds.

•Not recommended for infants less than 2 months unless directed by a doctor.

•Use cautiously in pregnancy and breastfeeding (consult a physician).

•Do not use on inflamed, broken, or oozing skin without medical advice.

Most people tolerate it well, but some may experience:

Common:

•Itching or mild burning sensation

•Redness or irritation at the application site

•Tingling or stinging

Rare:

•Allergic reactions (rash, swelling, breathing difficulty)

•Excessive skin dryness

•Secondary skin infections if scratched

•Store at room temperature(15–25°C / 59–77°F).

•Keep away from direct sunlight and heat.

•Keep out of reach of children.
